Commlink: Build a buff

SWG Comlink - January 29th: Build a Buff

Build-a-Buff

Build-a-Buff is a new system of Inspiration Buff that replaces the existing system and gives Entertainers the ability to provide unique, custom buffs for their customers. Entertainers will be able to select from a wide range of modifiers and effects which are combined to create a single buff tailored to the needs of their patron.

This new Inspiration System is easy to use for both the Entertainer and the patron. Similar to the way it operates now, the patron first “watches” or “listens” to the Entertainer. If the Entertainer wishes to inspire their patron, they use their “Inspire” command with the patron targeted.

This will bring up the Build-a-Buff interface. A list of modifiers and effects are displayed, organized by categories. The Entertainer can then begin selecting the effects they wish to apply. Most effects can be stacked multiple times for greater benefit. Entertainers have a limited number of “Buff Points” to spend on creating their buff and the cost of different effects vary.

The Entertainer may also enter a credit cost for the service in the window. When the Entertainer is finished, she hits the “Accept” button. The Patron sees a window listing the effects that will be applied and the credit cost. If they find the offer agreeable, they may also hit “Accept”. The buff is applied with the listed effects and credits automatically and securely transferred to the Entertainer.

The Build-a-Buff Inspiration System is available to all Entertainers. For those who wish to specialize in Inspiration, Expertise Points can be spent to increase the number of “Buff Points” to spend to allow more modifiers and effects to be applied. In addition, Expertise are also available for purchase that will allow the Entertainer access to special packages that allow different and more powerful effects to be added to their custom buffs.

A wide range of effects means there's something for Entertainers to offer everyone regardless of class or level. This easy to use, robust system will give Entertainers an exciting and lucrative new way to please their customers.

Inspirational Buffs

As the Star Wars Galaxies experience expands in chapter 5, entertainers will have an exciting new way to inspire their audience. Replacing the old inspiration buff is a new "Build-a-Buff" feature that sets the stage for entertainers to create custom buffs for their customers.

By using the new build-a-buff system, entertainers can create a single buff that is composed of many bonuses created from a variety of available skill and ability enhancements.

With the wide range of bonus effects at their fingertips, entertainers will have something to offer everyone regardless of profession or level. This easy to use, robust system gives entertainers an inspirational and lucrative new way to benefit their customers.

The Build-a-Buff Window

Entertainers can easily build unique buffs for their customers using the new Buff Builder window. First, let's take a quick look at the Buff Builder and then we'll walk through building a customized buff step-by-step.

The Buff Builder window as it is seen by an entertainer.

Available Buffs: This window lists all the available bonuses that can be added to the buff.

Buff Package: As an entertainer adds or removes bonuses to the buff, they will be listed in the window on the right side of the available buffs.

Underneath the list of buffs is a display for the total amount of the cover charge, the amount of points available for the buff package and the total point cost of the buff package.

Buff Description: On the bottom of the buff builder window, a full description of the bonuses and their modifiers will be displayed.

Just above the description window, a thin window displays the cost of the buff being added to the package.

Building a Buff Step-by-Step

Entertainers can perform inspiration buffs in a cantina or a customizable camp. At any time, a person in the audience can start the inspiration buff by actively watching or listening to an entertainer perform their act.

Just use the radial menu to activate the "watch" or "listen" option. Once a customer has reached the maximum duration for the buff, both the entertainer and the person you are buffing will see a fly text display. After this happens, the entertainer can build the buff.

Step 1: Opening the Buff Builder window

  • When a customer asks for a buff, the entertainer clicks the inspiration buff button on their tool bar or can type the /inspire command into their chat window.
  • The buff builder window will open for them to create a custom buff.

This is what the Buff Builder window looks like when the entertainer begins (above).

Step 2: Choosing bonuses to add to the buff

  • Each category will display a list of available bonuses when the entertainer clicks the yellow box (a complete list of the available bonuses is available below).
  • When the entertainer finds a bonus to be added to the buff, click on the buff type and then click the add button. The added bonus will appear in the frame on the top right of the buff builder window.

In the bottom box, the entertainer will see a full description of the bonus and the modifier that will be applied.

At the same time, the customer will see all of the buffs in the package in the "buff recipient" window.

This way, entertainers can work closely with their customers to create just the kind of buff they are looking for.

The buff recipient window.

Entertainers may also add a cover charge to their inspiration buff.

Step 3:
Choosing bonuses

  • Entertainers can continue to add bonuses to their buff package until they have used all of their available buff points.
  • As an entertainer gains level and chooses the appropriate expertise abilities, the amount of possible points for a buff package will also increase.
  • When the entertainer has finished creating their customized buff and their customer is happy with it, they click the accept button. The customer must also click the accept button in the buff recipient window.

When both players press their accept buttons, the entire buff package will be applied and the customer will see the inspiration buff icon on their status bar. If the entertainer added a cover charge, the amount of the cover charge will be deducted from the customer's available credits.
  • If a customer changes their mind about the buffs they would like, the entertainer can start over at any time before pressing the accept button by pressing the clear button.

Congratulations, the customer is now inspired with a buff personalized just for them!

Build-a-Buff Tips

  • Entertainers have custom inspiration buffs available at level 1, right when they start playing.
  • If an entertainer chooses the Creativity expertise ability, the amount of possible points for a buff package will be increased.
  • Building buffs does not require expertise points, but entertainers can choose to make their buff packages more potent by purchasing expertise points when they become available.
  • You can build the buff and still continue to accrue time toward the buff until both the entertainer and the buff recipient both click the accept button.
  • A cover charge may be set or changed any time during the buff building. If an entertainer changes the amount of the cover charge after the recipient accepts, both buttons will be reset so everyone can agree on the new amount.
  • The customer will not see the buff icon in their status bar until after the buff package is complete and both the entertainer and the recipient click the accept button.
