Space-faring adventurers will have new ships at their disposal in Chapter 8! These gunships, loaded with firepower for supporting the Empire, the Rebel Alliance, or those wishing to remain out of the sight of both, are sure to appeal to all pilots.
Blacksun AEG-77 Vigo
The Black Sun's transports became a common sight in both the underworld and legitimate shipping with the advent of Xizor Transport Systems. This particular transport class became well known as lightly defended. Pirates from a variety of bands began picking off the freighters, particularly those smuggling illegal cargo for Black Sun.
Instead of dedicating fighters to escort transports carrying valuable cargo, Black Sun began modifying some of their transports to carry heavy firepower and act as escorts for the rest of the convoys. Named after Black Sun's lieutenants, the Vigo, this once-merchant class vessel has been elevated to the status of "gunship."
This gunship comes equipped with two forward mounted guns, four top mounted turrets, and two bottom mounted turrets. The gunship, originally a transport ship, is still large enough to hold a number of items and passengers inside.
Imperial Assault Gunship
Although this ship might look similar the Lambda-class shuttle at first glance, don't let appearances deceive you. The Galactic Empire uses the Imperial gunship in situations that call for aggressive firepower.
Two forward mounted guns, three forward mounted turrets, in addition to the two turrets on the top and one at the rear of the gunship, pack quite the punch. This combat-ready vessel can seek out and destroy any unsuspecting Rebels in its path.
Rebel Assault Gunship
The gunships employed by the Rebellion are armed to the teeth for occasions when Imperial entanglements cannot be avoided.
The Incom X4 gunship boasts two forward mounted guns, three mounted turrets on the top, and three mounted turrets on the bottom.
Like the gunships employed by neutral factions and Imperials, the Rebel gunship has a spacious interior with more than enough room to stretch your legs. Each gunship consists of multiple levels that can hold a number of items and cargo. Capable of lightspeed, storage, and combat, these gunships can fulfill a variety of needs for pilots and passengers venturing into space.
If you're new to space or a grizzled veteran pilot, these ships have something for everyone. If it's the pure firepower of a gunship you're looking for, or a fully stocked transport taking a journey across the stars, take a spin in the new ships in Chapter 8.
I wouldnt be caught dead carrying grocieries in that IMP Gunship. The neutrals by far still have the monopoly of cool looking ships.

Just when you thought you liked the Gunship stats.. I'm going to nerf them in favor of reducing incoming damage on multi-player ships by 10% per person (90% maximum) in them. The algorithm roughly follows as 5% per crew member (50% maximum from this bonus) and 5% per active member (pilot, co-pilot, and gunner in a turret 50% maximum). If the bonus exceeds 90%, it is capped at 90%.
This means that the more friends you have with you, the tougher the ship becomes. However, this applies to not only gunships but all multi-player ships.
The reason for this is so that a lone player doesn't fly a massive ship around. The slower speed, turning rates, and acceleration/deceleration are not enough of a limiting factor for such a heavily armored and shielded ship. We still want to avoid a small ship destroying a large ship with a large crew quickly, though.
I'll dial back the shields from 40k to 25k and the armor from 60k to 30k. Being hit for 12000 with a full crew will do 1200 damage to a gunship. It would take roughly 46 shots from a single gun doing maximum overloaded damage to destroy a gunship (not including shunting and recharging).
Well they should learn about the whole "grouping" aspect of a game thats a MMO, if they hate to group and get the awesome bonus that this supposed nerf is, then maybe they should pick up one of the many single player space shooter's!!
The day we all get in to one ship I'll be sleeping due to 9 hour time difference, and the rapture having occurred.

I agree with everyone on the afk players / alts aspect of it along with giving bonuses to players not doing anything to benefit the ship (POB's).
That shouldn't be allowed.
I agree more with the handicap for lesser crewed ships rather than bonuses (based on how many it takes to actually fully crew each ship). And I'm totally against giving a bonus to 2-3 man ships due to the easily exploitable use of afk alt's.
I have discussed this with Blix and we are going to go ahead and not release to test with the gunship shield modifiers. I believe the designers had some valid reasons for wanting to go this route, but for the sake of maintaining focus on the really cool aspects of this chapter I do not want people overly focused on those changes. We will be logging and closely monitoring how the new gunships are used and how they fare in combat and as always reserve the right to make adjustments in how they work before going live.
Have a great Thanksgiving and keep eyes peeled for the release of Chapter 8 to test after the holiday.
"It's been a crazy, busy period," said SWG Lead Designer Thomas "Blixtev" Blair. "As one (update) is ending, we start spooling up for the next one."
In Chapter 7, SWG players were presented with a laundry list of new content, including revitalized areas, new epic quests and an entirely integrated collection system that lets players earn badges for various accomplishments from ridding Tatooine of womp rats to building a weapons collection to rival any museum. Chapter 8 is centered around the space review-with-Lead-Designer-Thomas-Blixtev-Blair#" target="_blank" itxtdid="4823678">game.
"We haven't seen any major issues with 7," Blair said, "so we've been able to concentrate more on 8."
That bit of extra attention turned out to be almost necessary. The Jump to Lightspeed expansion, which introduced the space game, was released nearly two years ago. Since that time, it's remained mostly untouched. Additionally, changes to the development team also posed problems.
"No one here really worked on space," Blair said, "so we had to go talk to the pilots. The pilot community has been great, a big help."
Of course, once the team learned what needed to be fixed and what the players would like to see, they then had to figure out how to make changes. Blair likened the update to working on a European car without any metric tools.
"On top of that, no one's tried to start the car in a couple years," Blair said. "I'd have to guess (Chapter 8) has been one of our most difficult updates. A lot of our tools didn't work."
Once the team adapted, adjusted or created new tools, the work came easier.
"We've added a bunch of things and a lot of long-standing bugs have been knocked out," Blair said.
At the top is the list is the expansion of the collections system into space, opening new avenues for players to earn badges.
ISD Heroic Encounter - Interior
"We also added a new space zone," Blair said. "Ord Mantell comes with a new, landable space station, Nova Orion, where players can land their ships and hang out. We also made it a quest hub for some very difficult, master-level quests."
Along that line, the team added a new Heroic Encounter players can access in Aurilia. Like the others, groups of players will face a series of review-with-Lead-Designer-Thomas-Blixtev-Blair#" target="_blank" itxtdid="4704798">challenges leading to a final epic battle with a powerful enemy. Unlike the others, players may have to find their own transport. This encounter takes place on an Imperial Star Destroyer.
According to Blair, while the Heroic Encounter itself is based on the ground-game, players may have to hire a pilot, or make sure their group includes one, to "smuggle" them to the Star Destroyer.
"We're hoping the way we've incentivized everything, we'll get a lot of people who haven't been up to give it a try," Blair said.
One of those incentives will be the chapter gift. While Blair declined to describe it, he did say that like Chapter 7's commlink, it will give players a reason to check out the new content.
"We think the chapter gift is pretty nice," Blair said. "It's based around the space game.
"That's something we decided to do, give players something that brings you into the new content rather than just some random item we throw in your inventory."
New Gunboats
Aside from expanding collections, adding new territory and quests, the development team has also been enjoying themselves, experimenting with the new gunboat POB ships - one for each of the three pilot factions, Rebel Neutral and Imperial, along with a new single-seat fighter.
"We've spent a lot of time playing around in the new gunboats," Blair said. "These thing are huge. My favorite is the neutral one, by far."
Being gunboats, the new ships have more weapon stations, prompting the team to take a closer look at turret controls.
"We've adjusted the gimballing in the turrets, making them easier to use," Blair said. "Fighting in a turret is a much more pleasurable experience."
And these ships won't have the troublesome blind spots that are the bane of their NPC brethren.
"That's one of the major failings of the AI," Blair said. "You can get in a blind spot and stay there. You can't do that with these."
