Reverse Engineering System for Traders

The new Reverse Engineering System being implemented in Chapter 5 is designed to provide traders with a greater level of involvement in the Star Wars Galaxies economy, along with making them a more valuable member of any party or player association. Through this system, traders will now be able to reverse engineer items in-game to create new item upgrades for use by themselves or other players.

Overview

With Chapter 5, traders will gain the ability to craft a reverse engineering tool. The trader will then be able to use this tool to deconstruct items, weaponry, armor or clothing in-game and extract “Bits” to create item upgrades that can be applied to other items to enhance them. Deconstructing an item through reverse engineering will destroy the original item, but it will always produce a Bit of some form, so the trader's efforts and items will never be wasted.

Deconstructing an Item

The reverse engineering tool is very easy to use. The trader simply places the item that he or she wishes to deconstruct into the tool. The item will not be deconstructed until the player activates the tool, so traders can avoid accidentally deconstructing the wrong item. Upon activation of the tool, the item will be destroyed and a Bit will be created in its place. The Bits created will be related to the item that was originally deconstructed, and will take the form of either a “Power Bit” or a “Modifier Bit,” both of which are necessary to craft an item upgrade.

Deconstructing weapons, armor or clothing that have bonus stats will result in creating a Power Bit. For example, if a trader deconstructed a weapon that had +5 precision, the result of the reverse engineering process would create a Power Bit with a value less than or equal to five. A player's skill in reverse engineering, along with luck, will determine how close the Power Bit is to the original item's value. Creating an item upgrade with a single stat requires a “1st Order Power Bit.” Players can create item upgrades with two or three stats if they have purchased the expertise skill to do so, but they will also need to have an existing item upgrade with a single stat, a 2nd or 3rd Order Power Bit, and a Modifier Bit.

The Modifier Bits are obtained when traders use the reverse engineering tool on two junk items, generally those dropped from droids or NPCs. Most combinations will result in a “common” Modifier Bit that corresponds to one of the six major stats: strength, agility, stamina, constitution, luck and precision. However, there are close to 120 combinations throughout the galaxy that will result in “rare” Modifier Bits that deliver a host of bonuses for combatants and crafters alike.

Crafting Item Upgrades

For the most part, Power Bits created through the reverse engineering system can be used to upgrade any piece of weaponry, clothing or armor. However, traders must fashion the Power Bits into an upgrade specific to the type of item he or she wants to enhance, using the Modifier Bits.

A Power Bit and a Modifier Bit are combined in the reverse engineering tool to craft the item upgrade. For example, combining a Power Bit of +5 with a Modifier Bit of “strength” will result in an item upgrade of +5 strength. Also, the trader can choose between two different forms for the item upgrade: permanent (Skill Enhancing Attachments) and temporary (Power-Ups). The SEAs can be applied to items that have an open socket on them. These sockets are found only on crafted items. The Power-Ups only last for a limited time, but they can be applied to crafted, dropped or rewarded objects, regardless of the number of slots.

Applying Item Upgrades

Once an SEA or a Power-Up has been acquired from a trader, any player may apply the upgrade to the item by dragging the upgrade onto the item in the player inventory. Common SEAs can be applied to any socketed piece of weaponry, clothing or armor, but there are some rare and powerful SEAs that are limited to shirts and breastplates.

Only one Power-Up can be applied to an item at any given time, but players can apply a Power-Up to an item that has already received an SEA.

I didnt notice it mentioned, but can SEAs be removed from items once applied?

i think they'll work as the old CA's and AA's since that system is already in place so i also doubt it.

My only worry is that as they arent bringin back decay, or so it seems, within about 3 months of the revamp everyone will have full sets of +25 stat max resist armour and then there wont be a call for much anymore.

I still dont see how any of this stuff works with regard to chefs and architects

I agree, don't see how RE can benefit anyone besides AS, WS, Tailor and DE with what's written there. And as you pointed out, it's only gonna be a boost till people get max bonus armor, clothes and weapons... then the demand will drop to a trickle

The Nuts and Bolts of Reverse Engineering

At a glance:

  • Reverse Engineering
  • How does Reverse Engineering work?
  • Reverse Engineering Tool
  • Creating a Power-Up
  • Creating a Skill Enhancing Attachment
  • Bigger, Better Bits!
  • Creating items with two and three bonuses
  • Additional Intel

Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is a new crafting feature coming to Star Wars Galaxies in Chapter 5. It provides traders with a new way to customize armor, clothing and weapons. These new items will be very competitive in combat making them a more appealing purchase for potential customers. Reverse Engineering is also very handy for traders who provide their player associations with the latest and greatest gear.

Reverse Engineering is really going to open up a huge variety of bonuses and item modifications, so let's look at the nuts and bolts of how it works.

How does Reverse Engineering work?

Traders can use a reverse engineering tool to deconstruct loot items. The tool breaks the items down into their basic "bits": power bits and modifier bits.

These modifier bits and power bits are combined to make skill enhancing attachments, power-ups or even better bits. Finally, skill enhancing attachments and power ups can be added to crafted armor, clothing and weapons to give them a wide variety of bonuses and modifiers.

Reverse Engineering Tool

Understanding how to use the reverse engineering tool will play a very important role in successfully creating new items.

Here are some tips:

  • Reverse engineering tools can be created by any trader with the Novice Artisan skill.
  • This tool will deconstruct certain types of loot items into power bits and modifier bits.
  • Power bits and modifier bits can be combined to create skill enhancing attachments, power-ups and even better bits.
                      Reverse Engineering Tool

Creating a Power-Up

Power-ups are temporary buffs that will give you a variety of bonuses and/or attribute modifiers. Here is a step-by-step look at creating a power-up.

1. You start creating a power-up by choosing a loot item to deconstruct. Loot items are reverse engineered by the tool into power bits and modifier bits.

  • Loot items with skill modifiers can be reverse engineered to create power bits. The loot items you should look for will most often be armor, clothing or weapons.
  • Once you deconstruct the item into a power bit, you cannot change it back.

Example of a stat modified loot item that can be reverse engineered into a power bit.

2. Next, use the radial menu to open your reverse engineering tool. Drag-and-drop your chosen loot item into the crafting tool's inventory.

    Tips

    • Make sure that the auto-sort option to drag-and-drop items into your inventory is disabled.

    • If the auto-sort inventory option is enabled, you won't be able to drag the item into another window (it will just auto-sort into your inventory).

    • If you have the auto-sort inventory option disabled, you can also drag-and-drop the loot item onto the tool instead of opening the window to place the item if you wish.

    3. Once you have placed the loot item into the reverse engineering tool, close the tool's inventory window. Then activate the radial menu and select the option that says, "Reverse Engineer."

When you do this, the power bit will be placed in your inventory.

    4. Next, you will need a modifier bit. Creating a modifier bit is similar to creating a power bit, but you should choose a different type of loot to deconstruct.

    • Electronic loot items such as software modules, chassis blueprints, medical devices, circuit boards and other similar items may all be converted into modifier bits.

    • You can place them in the tool's inventory or drag-and-drop them into the tool the same as if you were making a power bit.

    5. Use the radial menu to select the "Reverse Engineer" option on the tool again and the modifier bit will be placed in your inventory.

    6. Then place the power bit and the modifier bit into the reverse engineering tool. You can do this either by opening the window to drag and drop the item onto the tool, or if your auto-sort option is disabled, just drag and drop it directly onto the tool.

    7. Finally, use the radial menu and select the option to create your power-up!

Here is an example of a power-up for armor.

    • Power-ups will boost clothing, armor and weapons with a temporary bonus to your character attributes and/or skills.

    • To use a power-up, all you have to do is drag-and-drop the power-up onto the item you want to boost.

    • You can stack power ups with socketed clothing or armor that has skill enhancing attachments for a combined bonus.

    Creating a Skill Enhancing Attachment

Skill enhancing attachments are permanent bonuses that any player can add to armor or clothing. All you have to do is drag and drop the skill enhancing attachment onto the piece of armor or clothing.

To create a skill enhancing attachment, you'll go through the same steps as above but instead of selecting "Create Powerup," choose the option that says, "Create Skill Enhancing Attachment."

Here is an example of a Skill Enhancing Attachment.

    • Skill enhancing attachments can be sold to any player to enhance their socketed armor or clothing.

    • Traders can also place skill enhancing attachments in socketed armor and clothing crafted to customize merchandise they are selling.

    Bigger, Better Bits!

Take your reverse engineering to the next level by creating power-ups and skill enhancing attachments with two and three bonus modifiers!

By combining power bits and modifier bits, you can create 2nd order and 3rd order power bits.

To do this, add a power bit and a modifier bit into the tool.

Select the reverse engineer option and the result will be a 2nd order power bit.

To get a 3rd order power bit, place the 2nd order power bit and a modifier bit into the tool. Reverse engineer it and a 3rd order power bit will be placed in your inventory.

Skill enhancing attachments and power-ups created with 2nd order power bits will have two bonuses and those created with 3rd order power bits will have three bonuses!

Creating items with two and three bonuses

To create a skill enhancing attachment with two or more bonuses, you will need the following:

    • An existing skill enhancing attachment with one bonus modifier on it already (ex.: a +20 Constitution clothing attachment)

    • A 2 nd order power bit (Ex.: +15)

    • A modifier bit. (Ex.: Luck)

Put all three items in the tool, reverse engineer them and voila! You will have a clothing skill enhancing attachment with +20 Constitution and a second bonus of +15 Luck.

The process for making a skill enhancing attachment with three stats works the same way, except you should use a 3rd order power bit and another modifier bit.

    Additional Intel

  • You can drag-and-drop a skill enhancing attachment onto any crafted item that has sockets.
  • Bonuses from skill enhancing attachments and power-ups will stack.
  • Bonuses from expertise and skill enhancing attachments / power-up bonuses will stack
  • No-trade and bio-linked items cannot be reverse engineered.

  • Crafted armor and clothing with socketed item that have skill enhancing attachments on them may be reverse engineered.

  • Experimentation & Assembly bonuses from suits, backpacks, and other clothing is calculated when you are reverse engineering.
  • Traders can specialize in reverse engineering by spending trader expertise points in reverse engineering.
  • Reverse engineering on the ground and reverse engineering for space components are separate skills.
  • All traders may reverse engineer except for shipwrights who can reverse engineer space loot. Shipwrights can make the reverse engineering tool to sell if they wish.
  • Most skill modifiers will still have a maximum of +25 (experimentation for example). The six main stats (Constitution, Stamina etc.) are currently exempt from this cap.
  • Skill enhancing attachments will not be limited to the six basic character attributes. They will include a wide variety of possible bonuses for both existing and new abilities.
  • With all the different loot items and possible bonuses that are included, there is upwards of 5000 different combinations possible!

a comment on relisting muliple items on vendors...

Elyssa wrote:

You've always been able to multi-select, you just had to relist them one at a time and without their previous price or description.   So if all 100 items sold for 1000cr and you didn't want to enter a description, you could multi-select all 100 items, click relist, click sell, click relist, click sell, click relist, click sell, click relist, click sell, etc, etc, etc...
So you're saying we can now multi-select, click relist, and all 100 items will return to sale with their previous price and description or do we still have to go through the multi-click process but now with the proper prices and descriptions?

Relist will automatically put up the 100 selected items back up for sale at each item's last selling price and description.

Sell will iteratively display the Sell window for each of the 100 selected items where you can specify the selling price and description for each item.  The Sell window will be prepopulated with the item's last selling price and description.

In typical SOE wisdom.. the RE guide they posted as a Friday feature is actually completely incorrect.. see below post from player from TC

Well, to be honest, I don't think you played with the system on TC. All the testers agreed that you cannot get a 2nd or 3rd order power bit via the method you describe. You wrote that you put a 1st order bit and a modifier bit into the RE tool and choose Reverse Engineer to make it a 2nd order bit. That does not work.

To get 2nd and 3rd order bits, you need to use either 2 single stat loot items, 1 single/1 double or 2 double stat loot items (these all give a 2nd order bit, though not 100% of the time). If you use 2 3-stat items, 3 1-stat items, etc, you should get a 3rd order bit, but not 100% of the time.

All we know for sure is that the method described by you does not work, ever, 100% of the time.

Under Additional Intel you wrote:

You can drag-and-drop a skill enhancing attachment onto any crafted item that has sockets. This is not entirely accurate. If the SEA has anything other than a basic stat on it, it can only be applied to a shirt (CA), chestplate (AA), or weapon (WA). You also cannot combine base stats and special stats on one SEA.

So, all in all, it still isn't an accurate picture of how Reverse Engineering works.

Oh, in the example, you show a 4-stat item becoming a 1st Order Power Bit. That will only happen if you do not have the Expertise to make higher order power bits. Oh, that is something completely missing from the feature; you must have the expertise before you can make higher order bits.

The last picture you have shows a breastplate that has the SEA added, but still has sockets. Things were changed. All socketed items receive only one socket. If you put a single-stat SEA in that socket, you are done. You can Retrofit the item to empty the socket or you can Reverse Engineer the item (thus destroying it) to get a new Power Bit, but you cannot put any more SEAs on it. You can still use a power up on it.

Powerups seem to only be usable on shirt/chestplate/weapon, also.

I think you should put up an "Under Construction" or "Being Reverse Engineered" page and rewrite the whole thing from the ground up, after you use a CL90, fully expertised Trader to make some items. Get fresh pictures and an accurate depiction of making the bits, SEAs, and PuPs.
