Pen & Zach's City Beautification Project

Hello Guildee's

I've been wandering around the city, admiring it's lack of straight lines and uniform streets, with Pendarric.

He's been raving on about the decorations we could add to make the place look more glam. I've been drooling about the lack of geometric straight lines, and a nice, tidy order to things.

So we got together, biked about, and talked about what we think is in the wrong place, and what would look good together.

Then I found the city planner, and painstakingly mapped the central part of Amber Ridge, minus the decorations, and outlying bunkers and factories.

Sorry I can't make this link tidier, but creating a named hyperlink seems to truncate this code. Cut and paste the below into your browser to see AR as it currently is: (more words below the link)

Then I applied the changes Pen and I discussed (nothing major, realising the logistics of moving stuff) - and here is the link my first attempt fo tidying up (my own work, as Pen left me to this bit biggrin)

Obviously, this can't all be done at once, but I'd like feedback on what people think - this was done moving the minimal amount of buildings. Once done, the decorations can be evenly spread about the 2 squares and numerous street between the housing. Lovely! (end of message - please reply!)

Oh - and I can easily update the current and future plan view of the city, and keep updates on this forum, if people like, and changes start to happen!

looks ok, there will be some probs with some of the scattered houses that we cant move due to inconsiderate people re-subbing for a month not having any intention to play and then sodding off so thier house didnt get packed up.

I am currently looking at trying to ditch a few of my houses, and maybe even the Tat PA hall I have, but that wont have too much impact.

One other thing.. we have put most of the musty bunkers on the east of town, but until the packup there was a cantina in the middle of them that offset teh layout, we should look at tidying that up too.

Maybe also look at putting all the factories in one spot? like an industrial estate? I dunno, I know the traders might not like it too much but scattered factories lokk a bit messy to me.

Morning all,

And thanks very much to all who have cooperated so far! Amber Ridge is certainly on a sweet spot of terrain and is also one of the oldest cities on the server. Sprucing the place up a bit could help us gather more of the right kind of citizen and guild member. Even if it doesn't, I think that maximising what we already have is an end in itself.

Even though there are defunct structures belonging to dead accounts, I think that with a few strategic moves we can accomplish a great deal. We have already moved a few buildings that seemed out of place and I think that has started to make a difference.

Obviously the main town square is the most important part of AR - it's the first thing you see as you shuttle in and is actually quite imposing in my opinion. In order to make it even more so, I am gradually gathering the resources to make one of each of the various normal and exotic gardens that can be placed by the mayor. We'll put one of each at the bottom of the cliff behind city hall so that we can all see what they look like and venture preferences. A few of these in the main square and elsewhere could add a bit more bling and make the town look a bit more impressive than it already does.

Alien Square, for those who aren't familiar with it, is adjacent to Rom's museum, and is a bit of town history, with the old LxA guild hall at the other end. It's looking a bit sorry atm - Jib has been maintaining this all by himself, but I think it would be nice to preserve it and maybe even breathe some life back into it.

I think the most controversial idea so far is that Audie, Ivan and Waz move their small tat houses from the vicinity of City Hall. These are obviously prime spots and I'd be loathe to leave such a spot myself if I had it! I think the main issue here is these three small houses crowd the City Hall, which is the largest building opposite the shuttleport. Please try and imagine what City Hall would look like if flanked by something like exotic gardens, with that view over the cliff beyond them.

Having said that, I wouldn't want anyone to move to somewhere that they are unhappy with, and I know that Audie's and Ivan's shops are great assets to the town, and get a lot of custom and should therefore be in prominent places. I could be wrong though, and it could be that most members prefer those 3 houses left where they are - please speak up if you have opinions either way! It may be worth considering moving these two shops onto Alien Square, which would certainly breathe life back into it - perhaps with a nice garden plonked in the middle. I know this may seem that this is a relegation into the suburbs but, actually, Alien Square is right next to the shuttleport, and two very active shops would make it much more than a relic. Alternatively we could find new spots on the main square for these shops, which would involve a minor reshuffle of some of the municipal structures (garage etc).

I think we should consider this an ongoing project, as there are a few horribly-placed houses that belong to folk who have either left, or log on infrequently. People do return, however, and I believe there will be another house packup event soonish, which would allow us to deal with those few houses.

Above all, this is everyone's city, and the last thing I want to do is tread on anyone's toes so, if it looks like that is happening, please let me know!

Over the next week or so, I anticipate a few buildings moving around a bit - please keep your eye on the layout of the city and speak up if there is anything you don't like, or any ideas/requests you may have!

nice logical changes on the map where it not ,that im one step ahead of u on most of it :D

the large and small house in the med houseing section is ycal's who i send a mail about but not been online in a wile the small house is faye's and i have no idea who that is or who gave here the zoning for that house but also send a mail about it.

as for the small houseing block the houses currently not in row are from inactives.

same for the large house behind the guildhall its ewalebs and i know he keeps his account active but i not seen in ages either.

the rest of the changs seem very doable. imo

I'll try and get on at a time when someone can give me zoning. I have been on a couple of times in the past month but at times when very few other people have been around.
I may get a chance to be on late tomorrow night, but with packing for holiday and an assignment due in I think it may be next week before I'm on.

Thank you for your effort, I think it will make city really more beautiful. I sure would move my bunker as you show in your plan. What I saw in another city (dont remember where) was a big fountain in the middle of the main square. This impressed me even more because it was on Tat where water is rare. It very much remembers me of the main square of some Arabian cities, where water fountains also show the wealth of the cities.

Thanks for the support Montsalvat, and I love the fountain idea!

We're planning on getting a lot of the houses moved into 'zones', then discuss what decoration to have where. If you look at the bottom of the cliff in AR at the mo, there is an assortment of exotic gardens Gellan has made that we can scatter around fetchingly.

It's an ongoing project, and will take time - but as we make bits look nice, hopefully it will pick up momentum as the rest of the city folk get involved

As already said, there are a bunch of gardens placed randomly at the bottom of the cliff south of AR by the race droid.

Pleas take a chance to look at these and let us know what ones you like and think would look good where / why etc.

Below is an update of what the city looks like NOW - as you can see, then changes are having an effect!

The gardens Jibb mentioned are now south of all the large generic guild halls on top of the cliff - go see what you think! And please have a look at Alien Square and the new square forming SW of it. Good viewpoints are the surrounding hill tops, or top of PA halls!

Please get involoved and post comments/suggestions/encouragement!

I dont think the shuttle should be moved into the middle of the 'square'

Given the restrictions we have atm nothing else is symmetrical about anything else.
We want people to leave the shuttle and go 'wow, neat' not 'erm.. what happened'

we cant move the theatre, so thats always gonna be a stumbling block.

ah - maybe I misunderstood Audie. Shuttle in middle of SIDE of the square, not the square itself. This is where it is now, and I think it should stay.

Realise Theatre cannot move so moving it is in none of the plans. However, if we can get hold of Tale, we can move the medical centre, then the cantina into that slot to make the central square more 'square', with the shuttle in the middle of the north side, opposite the town hall.

Jib - you see the PM I sent you?

I have been contacted by Rahoih (guild -RTF-) asking about moving to Amber Ridge.
He has a couple of Generic PA halls he would be bringing with him.
I have told him to contact Pen with regard to this as I am unlikely to be in game before early next week, and Pen and Zach are the city layout gurus :D

So expect some contact re this.

is this one member of the -RTF- guild wanting a house in AR, or a guild wanting to relocate ?!?

Both is good news, if you can vouch for the guy :)

Now that Y'Cal has logged in and moved his houses (thanks man) next on my priority list for moves is Einia (bunker) and Tale (Medic Centre)

Can anyone contact either of these and ask them to log in and contact me? They may have more properties that could do with moving too.....

Also, there are numerous other structures ruining the grand scheme of things - will post a longer list here in case anyone knows anything.

~Z~

oh - and Jib, come back soon! need some spaces on Alien Square freed up, and want to start playing with gardens! (unless we can vote Gellan for Mayor) :P

Yah ! Gellan for mayor (ducks for cover)

as far as I'm aware its just him waning to move to AR, he used to live there in the CU.

I dont know him personally but from the forum buzz he seems ok.

I'll be back Wed next week, away till the weekend then a bit hectic.

Here is a list of houses we'd like to get moved, if at all possible.

If anyone knows any of these characters and/or can contact them, please do, or let me or Pendarric know. The current window of players being able to log in free without re-subscribing is the ideal time to track these people down!

Sizzle - tents in main square
Sikki/Ewelab - large house in area behind KS Guildhall
Tale - medical centre
Faye - small house in block of mediums
Nixy - medium house where we want to put a garden
Rasner/Vlad - large house in block of mediums
Nixy+Oblivius+Don'rol - small houses where we want to put Tat. Guildhalls
Ewelab - factory where we want to put Tat. Guildhalls
Kh'aris+Borgen+Cazie - small houses where we want to put bunkers
"La Fortezza"+MnN+"two foxes"+rom - bunkers where we want to move Gen. Guildhalls
Ec-udrow+Amia+Audrie+Betth+"Abode of Awaken"+Amber shop - where we want to put Gen Guildhalls (realise some of these have now moved already)
Devon+Waro - Tat. Guildhalls where we want to put Gen. Guildhalls (Been waiting for available space before asking Waro to move)
O'Layin - small at bottom of cliff
Claralara - large at bottom of cliff
Elrica/Alanna - medium at bottom of cliff
Naschimento - Tat. Guildhall in new square behind mall
Einia - bunker in new square behind mall
Rebor - 2x small houses in new square behind mall
