E3 2008: EA CEO confirms KOTOR MMO John Riccitiello tells Conde Nast Portfolio that BioWare's mystery massively multiplayer project is a third installment in the Star Wars series. By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot Posted Jul 17, 2008 2:08 pm PT
Ever since it was announced in 2006, BioWare's massively multiplayer role-playing game has been shrouded in mystery. Though the Canadian developer opened a satellite studio in Austin, Texas, just to develop it, its cofounders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk maintained an iron wall of silence. However, Electronic Arts knew enough about the title to help convince the company to buy BioWare/Pandemic for $860 million last year.
Today, as E3 2008 wound down, the fog hanging around BioWare's MMORPG appears to have dissipated. Less than 72 hours after presiding over EA's own press event--where the project was nowhere to be found--CEO John Riccitiello almost casually revealed the MMORPG in question is a sequel of sorts to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," Riccitiello told Conde Nast Portfolio magazine. "The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about in partnership with Lucas [Arts is] coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry." When contacted by GameSpot, BioWare reps declined to comment further.
BioWare's first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game was released in 2003 for the original Xbox and PC, and was named the year's top RPG by GameSpot. An Obsidian Entertainment-developed sequel was released in 2004 and 2005 on the same two respective platforms. Both critically acclaimed games are set several thousand years before the events of the Star Wars films, and cast players as adventurers who eventually become powerful Jedi Knights.
Currently, the Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG is set for release sometime in 2009. Once it launches, it is unclear what will happen to LucasArts' current massively multiplayer title, the Sony Online Entertainment-developed Star Wars Galaxies.
thats what I thought But who knows, if its a jedi fest then I'll probably avoid it. And yes I can see the irony :P Unless everyone goes to it, then I'll follow, cant leave my KS'sers
GameSpy received an upcoming media invitation today from LucasArts and BioWare which is more than likely going to be the official unveiling of the long-rumored Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic-based MMORPG. Back in July, EA's CEO John Riccitiello confirmed that both companies were working on an MMO title based on the successful Knights of the Old Republic franchise.
The invite flyer can be seen below, stating, "The Wait is OVER" on the front and "the official unveiling of the game that's been rumored about for years" on the back.
GameSpy will certainly be in attendance, so keep October 21 in the back of your minds and remember to come back to get the full scoop on this not-so-mysterious mega announcement.
have to agree with starky im sure its still a bit to early to tell but im not impressed by the graphics and nothing know about classes and species yet.
Lol, whats the problem with sith and jedi? Half the server pop has a jedi toon anyway so they are popular, at least this way, with the setting- its actually fitting to have hundreds of sith and jedi running around.
They have choosen an interesting style, bit like the clone war cartoony style. I am not really a fan of the cartoony style but i think it looks pretty nice.
I really liked the comments to 1 of the screenies though
Person 1
"looks like crap, ruining the game so soon? Trying for a record? LOL"
Answer of person 2 "You can tell how many ex players of Star Wars Galaxies are looking forward to this game. And oh joy they've brought with them their incessant whining, criticizing and bad attitudes."
I don't think it looks particularly amazing, will have to wait for more details I guess.
What I DO like though, is that it is set after the events of KOTOR 1 and 2, which has yet to be written - unlike galaxies, set between episodes 3 and 4 there can only be one outcome :P This potentially has the option to write star wars history.
This potentially has the option to write star wars history.
Not Re -write history, but write it :) Since it's never been chronicled before, the events and stories you could potentially play here, could become cannon. If you're interested in that sort of thing that is :P A bit like the new Force Unleashed game - its a telling of an unknown peice of star wars history- although the overall outcome is innevitible - it still holds interest to star wars geeks (/bow).
Otherwise I guess we could also say 'what was the point of the prequel trilogy, since we know the empire will come into power and the rebellion will overthrow it, and Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader and is Lukes father' It's the telling of the events. The story.
