Well i seen on face book that SOE will not be back up this weekend.

Already in 2006 i started to believe that SOE wants to drop SWG for some unknown reason. NGE and all the profession changes together with the company's behaviour really made it look like they intentionally wanted to scare away the remaining players.
The fact that the game would be still around in 2011 though brought me to the conclusion that it just might be enormous incompetence which made it look like that.
Now i am having the same thoughts.
Where are the back-up servers?
I simply can't believe that the company is not able to restore services quicker. Now they are even stated to expect their servers to be secure again in end of may.
Also the so-called "attack profile" by that ominous hacker group and their motives are very untypical for hackers, despite the fact that they deny having anything to do with it.
While Sonys servers and networks are down, they are losing an incredible amount of money.
It doesn't benefit Sony to have the servers down, but it is the most responsible thing to do on their behalf.
They could try to recoup money by opening up the servers early or by not shutting them in the first place, but that could potentially be more damaging for us - exposing us to more security risk.
Yes, its **** the servers are down but its probably for the best.
As to how much truth is in this I do not know, all I know is what I have read. It is being said that Sony corp. servers that are hosting the SOE games was, or is running " Apache 2.2.3 " ( Apache is a software that is used on alot of web servers.) the problem, is that the software is out of date.
Apache 2.2.3 was released in 2006, the most current version is 2.2.17. Here is the kicker, they knew the software was outdated but had done nothing to update it. And to top it off, they were not running a firewall.
Networking 101 keep you software updated, make backups, and protect your data. OOPS someone didn't do their job..... They have already said they knew about the security issue but did nothing to fix it.
Programing 101 you have a back door, close it by changing the code, or close the port. Very easy to do, and it takes care of the prob.
Any first year IT student could have fixed it and had the server back up in a couple of hours.
As for backup servers, if they had of brought then online that backdoor into the network would have still been open.
As a network engineer, I know what Sony's IT team done was not the best of moves, but trust me, we are only being told part of the story. Remember Sony brought the FBI in on it. And to top that off, they are having to give congressional testimony about everything.
Sorry for being long winded, and trust me I want SWG back up as bad as everyone does. But the American government is involved in it, and we have a saying here in the states "When it comes to the government, everything is hurry up and wait."
Yes and No, but it is not the playstation console it's self, it is the web server. It would kind of be like Windows 95 on a new pc. (old and lots of flaws) Apache, for lack of better wording, and not wanting to bore everyone to death, is basically a cross-platform interpreter. Apache can be run on almost all systems. (Unix, Linux, Solaris, Novell NetWare, AmigaOS, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, and OS/2 just to name a few. ) And by gaining access to Apache, it allowed access to the systems root directory. Sorry there I go again. Just guessing I would say that the network its self is run on a Unix platform and Apache is the middle man.
Either way, logic dictates if they could have the servers up they would. This is going to crush their incoming revenue already and it will only get worse as it continues, BUT if they re-open prematurely and allow folks to get their info exposed a second time......well then consumer confidence in them would be totally lost and the consumer would have to be a fool to send them any money, much less their private and financial info....in other words, if they don't take as much time as necessary and take their time in getting this absolutely sorted out 100% the first time, then it will be the deathnail for SOE and the PSNetwork.
Besides, look on the brightside, maybe they are taking the opportunity to handle some performance related issues too, like the lag and LoS.... wishful thinking
I'd say that consumer confidence in them is completely lost already...
While I can confirm that Apache 2.2.3 is running on station.sony.com/soe.com - http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://station.sony.com
I'm afraid to say that the servers running starwarsgalaxies.com were much more out of date - http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.starwarsgalaxies.com
I can also confirm that the game servers (I've tested farstar.starwarsgalaxies.com and bria.starwarsgalaxies.com) are still up and responding to ping requests. It is only the login servers that have been taken down
Considering that the FBI are now involved, I'm not going to dig any deeper into finding out what happened however :P I can only hope that either Sony decides to be honest us or that somebody RIPS the information out of them
naah, people will log right back in as soon as the service is available again, maybe not everyone, but most will
why scared of the FBI? They wont hurt you. Now the Navy SEALS, thats a different story. I wouldnt mind if someone sent them the address of these hackers
Because they will get the local law enforcement involved, and I've had some run-ins with them in the past (with good reason), and they have stitched me up in the past. It's only the judges realising this that saved me from prison (how the hell do you run across a room that is only just big enough to hold a single bed, attack 3 police officers and resist arrest when you're unconscious and dying?)
On top of this, I'm also quite lucky that I'm still allowed to use computers. Got caught running amok on my high schools network. It's only because of the deputy head deciding not to get the police involved that I can
So the FBI paying attention to me for anything would be a bad thing for me :P
In my opinion this is bigger than the toyota recalls of last year and the tylenol recalls in the 80's.
I gotta say, it looks BLEAK for SWG if it is going to be offline for over a month. I will come back and I am sure I wont be alone, but a lot of folks are going to move on to other things and not look back after that long away. This could precipitate a server consolidation, maybe down to 3 servers plus farstar
I've tried it out, but I don't have the time to play really, and tbh, looking back at it, nowadays I prefer what we have, but that might just be because of the guild
--hmm, just went to their site. This looks very interesting, but I have a hard time imagining how a bunch of private individuals can possibly manage a project that proved to be unmanageable by a well-funded company.
If they pull it off though, it has some real potential. I wish I had time to help them, of the 3 years I have played this game, 2 of them were pre-CU but to be honest I have forgotten about alot of the game mechanics from back then.

May 12, 2011 We thank you for your patience as we continue to work around the clock to restore our game services. We know this has been a frustrating time for you and appreciate your understanding as we work to confirm the security of our network.
In light of the recent outage of Sony Online Entertainment's game services due to April's cyber-attack, we are committed to compensating our loyal player base for the inconvenience caused by the data breach and lost game time while we improve our security measures.
We are currently in the process of an extensive upgrade to our network to further protect your information from future attacks. It will likely be at least a few more days before we restore our services, and when we come back online, here is what you can expect for each of our game services.
First and foremost, all impacted players will receive 30 days of game time added to the end of the current billing cycle in addition to one day for each day the system is down. Additionally, many games are offering a variety of in-game items and special events to welcome players back once our services resume (per the outline below). This is true for both PC and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system based products. DC Universe Online: Batman and Two-Face Inspired Masks and 30 Marks of Distinction Free Realms®: Free daily items (7 to collect) Clone Wars Adventures: Count Dooku v2 Outfit EverQuest®: A series of events, including Double XP, Double Rare Mob Spawns and Double Faction Gains EverQuest II and EverQuest II Extended: A series of events, including Double XP, Double Guild XP, Loot Bonanza, and City Festivals Vanguard: Saga of Heroes®: A series of Double XP events Star Wars Galaxies: Bounty Hunter Statue, a miniature model of Boba Fett's ship, the Slave I Magic: The Gathering - Tactics: Four of each of these spells: "Ivory Mask", "Duress" and "Angelheart Vial", plus 500 Station Cash PoxNora®: Limited edition Carrionling, Welcome Back 5K Gold Award Tournaments and two Draft Tournaments, plus 500 Station Cash
For our lifetime subscribers, we'll grant in-game currency; specifically 20,000 coins for Free Realms, 7,500 Galactic Credits for Clone Wars Adventures and 10 Marks of Distinction for DC Universe Online (in addition to the items listed above).
And finally, our Station Access subscribers will receive 500 Station Cash, in addition to the subscription time and items listed above.
Additionally, we announced today that SOE will provide its U.S.-based Station Account holders with complimentary enrollment in an identity theft protection program through Debix, one of the industry's most reputable identity protection firms. For Station Account holders who live outside the U.S., SOE will be offering similar programs, if and as available, and will provide details as they're confirmed for each country or territory.
We continue to work around the clock to restore SOE's services and thank you for your continued patience as we complete our investigation of this criminal attack.
We want to thank you again for your patience as we work to get the SOE services back up and running. We received several questions and comments relating to the criminal attack to our network and would like to address some of the most common questions today. We are also going to continue to post updates to this website with new information as they become available.
We appreciate your continued patience and feedback. Thank you,
Sony Online Entertainment When will SOE's services be back online?
We have been working around the clock to restore operations as quickly as possible, and we expect to have some of our games and services up and running soon. However, we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we believe that the network is secure. How is the SOE intrusion related to the PSN/Qriocity intrusion? Was this a second attack on SOE?
While the two systems are distinct and operated separately, given that they are both under the Sony umbrella, there is some degree of overlap in design. The attacks were similar in nature. This is NOT a second attack; new information has been discovered as part of our ongoing investigation into the criminal attack in April. How is SOE planning to notify customers whose data may have been stolen?
We are sending out customer service notification emails to the email addresses we have on file for the accounts that were affected. These emails will be sent by Innovyx, our third party email distributor, and will contain either 'soe.innovyx.net' or 'soe.sony.com' in the sender field. SOE initially thought no data was extracted, what changed?
Essentially the perpetrators used sophisticated means not only to access the data, but also to cover their tracks. We committed to continue the investigation and in doing so, uncovered further information that we did not have when we initially believed the data was not stolen.
If you want to go into voice for a chatwe can setup a teamspeak server. You either have to create a local server yourself or you can rent/find a channel online
Well back when I used to play before they added voice the guild used skype to talk so theres always that and I heard that servers were possibly going up monday or tuesday nothing official though
i wouldn't mind getting in a voice chat and having a chat and discussing this farce by soe :P
@raxal - it has taken a few years for them to get to this point with the emu. it is quite doable however. i used to play on fully working WoW emulators. it's just a matter of time, coding skill and analysing packets
