Companion Gifts Guide: How to buy your love [Updated 4/17/2012 - Game Update 1.2 Ship Droids affection]

[Updated 4/17/2012 - Game Update 1.2 Ship Droids affection]

As we all know by now, our decisions and actions can please or displease our companions. And since your character will be stuck with the same companions for the rest of his.virtual life, might as well make them like you. Unfortunately, you wont win their hearts with good looks and a charming smile.yes, unlike real life, in SWTOR money CAN buy love!

Companion gifts are the way to gain the affection of your trusty comrades and they are categorized in ranks from 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest rank and 5 the highest.
There are three methods to procure companion gifts: you can purchase rank 1 and 2 companion gifts from the Fleets companion vendors and on some planets there are also companion vendors that sell gifts of higher rank. Another way is to buy them off the Galactic Trade Network (GTN), from the Miscellaneous category. Last but not least, mission skills can sometimes return companion gifts as rewards.

Since its doubtful that Qyzen Fess will appreciate the old box of chocolates and flowers you must know that each companion likes only certain types of gifts. Gift types are categorized into Imperial Memorabilia, Republic Memorabilia, Trophy, Technology, Courting, Luxury, Cultural Artifact, Weapon, Underworld Goods, and Military. So how will you know which companion likes what? The answer is pretty simple: rank 1 gifts can generate one of the following affection points: 0, +24, +54, +96. Each companion will like one or two gift types and by giving him one of those gifts you will receive +96 or +54 affection ( as it was noticed that some companions dont fancy any gifts that bring the max amount of points, namely 96). For detailed information about the gifts that each companion likes, check our gift charts (thanks to Traxex):

Gifts are also classified by quality: green (the most common), blue (obviously superior and provide 50% additional affection compared to green ones) and purple (very rare). Green gifts can be bought, while blue and purple ones can be obtained through Mission Skill quests or purchased from the Galactic Trade Network. However, purple gifts are hardest to find, through both Mission Skill quests and Galactic Trade Network so be sure you wont be seeing those too often.

Received affection points from gifting also vary on your affection level. The entire affection range is between 0 and 10.000 and new levels are reached at every 2,000 additional points. At level 1 affection, between 0 and 1.999 points, rank 1 gifts will provided the maximum affection. At level 2 affection, between 2.000 and 3.999, a rank 1 gift will only give 50% affection points, at level 3 affection it provides 25% affection points and so on. So basically, once youre past level 2 affection, rank 1 gifts become obsolete. If youre still in a fog have a look below at the overall classification for optimally using gifts:

Affection LevelGift Rank
1 (0-1.999)Rank 1 or higher
2 (2.000-3.999)Rank 2 or higher
3 (4.000-5.999)Rank 3 or higher
4 (6.000-7.999)Rank 4 or higher
5 (8.000-9.999)Rank 5

Courting gifts also work only on romanceable companions. You should also be aware that courting gifts give 0 affection to romanceable companions if you didn't started the romance story with them. You can start your romance story by talking to your companion on your ship or in a bar and choosing the Flirt option everytime possible.

You should also be aware that gifts don't give the same affection points at every affection level. As go up in affection rank with your companion, the gifts yield lower affection points, as presented in this chart:

To give a gift to your companion you must have him summoned and click with him on that gift. Right away you will see an affection gain and you can repeat the action every 30 seconds. However, the good news is that your companion gift preferences always remain the same. If for example your companion, likes Military gifts, if you give those to him they will always get you the maximum affection points.

Starting with Game Update 1.2 Ship Droids can gain affection just like the rest of the companions. Moreover, the Legacy Repair Droid (unlockable with Legacy level 7 and 1 million credits) sells various sensor units (with which you can equip your Ship Droid) that provide crafting bonuses as listed below:
